Gah! Nested forums... I never know where to put my posts.

There's a great Benjamin Franklin quote about why he opposed patents that would fit nicely in any discussion on free culture:

"[A]s we enjoy great advantages from the inventions of others, we should be glad of an opportunity to serve others by any invention of ours, and this we should do freely and generously."

Slides from a presentation from FSF India, could be a good starting point for the flow of our presentation.

"we need to fix this. We need to fix it quickly. We are now behind the curve of the movements for freedom that depend on code. And every day that we don't fix the problem of over-capitalized social media to do the politics of freedom, the more we are becoming part of the system which will bring about a tragedy soon."

"There are a lot of Egyptians whose freedom now depends upon their ability to communicate with one another through a database owned for profit by a guy in california who obeys orders from governments who send orders to facebook to disclose [peoples' personal info]"

"We are watching political movements of enormous value capable of transforming the lives hundreds of millions of people resting on a fragile basis, like the courage of Mr. Zuckerberg, or the willingness of Google to 'resist the State' where the State is a powerful business partner that Google cannot afford to insult"

"The very composition of social life, the way it works or doesn't work for us, for those who oppress, those who own, all now depends on software."

"code does the work of law, the state and revolutions."

Software has demonstrated "the power of ordinary people to organize and change the world without organizing into hierarchies, and without having to recapitulate the structures of power"

"Software is what the 21st century is made of" ... "What steel was to the power and economy of the 20th century, software is now" ... "it's the crucial building block, the component out of which everything else is made, including freedom, tyranny, 'business as usual', and spying on everyone for free all the time."

This is an amazing lecture by Eben Moglen at the FOSDEM (Free and Open Source Development European Meeting). I've had a chance to watch the whole lecture (and re-watch some parts) and copy some quotes that I thought stood out. It's full of incredibly good insight and info, and I think it's great to see someone with as much fanfare and influence as Eben Moglen using such direct and politically radical language when discussing the issues and priorities that surround free software. I can assure you that taking the time to watch or listen to it is 55 minutes well spent. Here are some interesting quotes that I've pulled from the video:

This video that I posted above talks about some great points that we can use. Perhaps we can build our presentation around some of them.

- impending environmental and economic problems that the world faces will likely require radical changes in lifestyle and novel solutions.

- Instead of one big solution for everything, we need many different things in different spheres all pulling us in the right direction.

- We need to motivate people to take ownership of their world and get engaged in developing creative solutions

- this can be accomplished by a shift from a "sit back and and be told culture" (enforced by what he calls "factory learning" and traditional media) to a more participatory "making and doing culture"

- a creative participatory culture celebrates peoples' everyday experience and creativity and motivates people to take ownership of their lives by participating in building the tools and systems they depend on instead of relying on corporations and external agencies to provide it for them

This youtube video called Participation culture, creativity, and social change. The video is a bit dry, I think, but it makes some excellent points that maybe we can use to build our presentation around.

This is a discussion thread where we can post links and materials about FOSS and the Free Tech/Free Culture movement that we've gathered, and also discuss ideas on how to assemble this material into presentations.
